YOUR BRAINS ARE CREATIVE

Ilustración de Angeles Nieto

Creativity is an ability with that we all are born, but can be weaken. As another part of the body that can not be used will reduce or disappear.

You are creative, you have creative brains. We are all creative, because we have the ability to imagine something. Not only in art creativity plays an important role, creativity is universal and is used in our business, science and in our daily lives.

How do the brains. Their relationship with creativity.

Understanding how the brains work will help us to understand the creativity and encourage it.

The main function of our brains is to ensure the survival of our body. Therefore, and due to evolution, our brains create information blocks, which are accessible for later use.

Four factors determine that the information blocks are stiff and strong, there are mental models created:

1. Experience

When we are faced with a certain situation and we end this successful and this situation subsequently arises again we will fix this in the same way, now faster and with minimum energy consumption. So, how often we solve a situation in the same way, the structure of these information blocks will be stiffer, stronger, and then emerge mental models, we repeat, without doubting its value.

2. Natural resistance to change

Our brains do not like change, this is interpreted as a factor of uncertainty. With a known situation they know how to act and thus to survive. We tend to maintain because the brains look for fixed patterns in the recognition and learning in our memory.

3. Cultural and educational reasons

Within our culture and education has always cultivated the logical reasoning, especially the numbers and words. At this time takes everything related to creativity an inferior position in the hierarchy of school subjects. In education is especially logical reasoning appreciated.

4. The emotional component

The emotional component is the degree to which an emotion is related to a stimulus. For example, if a dog has bitten you once, evokes anxiety and gives a signal of danger.

The advantage of having mental models or blocks of information is that we use it quickly, with little effort. This ability has enabled us to survive during our evolution. Thanks to these mental models, we can automatically perform motor tasks, such as cycling or cognitive tasks such as adding.

But these information blocks have the disadvantage that they are difficult to modify internally. In addition, our brains do not function as separate parts, but interrelated, as several related information blocks because all neurons form a network. When we mention the name of a person, our brain activates all the information blocks directly related to that person, his picture, his character, his history, etc.

Creativity consists of the challenge to make changes to these logical structures. Creativity comes forward thanks to the imagination. Only by breaking these structures can lead to a new, non-existing model. https://www.angelesearth.com/art-techniques/why-imagination-is-needed-10-reasons-to-encourage/

Brains divided into two hemispheres

From a physiological point of view, the brains are divided into two halves called hemispheres that perform different complementary roles.

“The person of the left hemisphere, which will say something like.” Go from here to the west and head north on Wind Street. Follow this three or four hundred meters and then turn off to the east at the street Levante “

The person of the right hemisphere. Will say something like this: “Turn right (pointing right) for the Church there (again pointing) Then you’ll pass a Zara and then along an ice cream parlor at the next traffic lights turn right towards a gas station’…” ( Wikipedia)

1. The left hemisphere

The left hemisphere is responsible for the functions of speech, writing, numbers, mathematics and logic. The left brain behaves analytically, build arguments, evaluate and criticize, creates logical reasons, calculates and makes planning.

2. The right hemisphere

The right hemisphere is responsible for feelings, emotions, creativity and skills of art and music. It is the brain of the image, from the spatial projection, intuition and the empathy.

Both hemispheres work together, there is a fluent dialogue, they complement and help each other. When an idea arises in the creative thought it must develop a logical structure, responsible for logical thinking

The brains of a child

The brains of a child are very creative. His imagination is well developed, their mental models evolve gradually through learning, through their experiences, their cultural environment, and genetics. It is precisely the lack of pre-established models, that the children are so creative.

The book “The element” by Ken Robinson begins with a great story:

“An elementary school teacher gave drawing lessons to a group of children from six years old. One girl was over twenty minutes very engrossed in what she did. The teacher found that fascinating. He asked what she drawed. Without looking up, said, them, “I’m drawing God.” The surprised teacher said, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” The girl replied: “They will know that soon.”

Why we should focus on developing the half of our brains as there is the possibility to multiply the capacity by two?

“Your brains are the most powerful computer in existence, not only it has the unlimited potential to change your life … but the world,” Shelley Carsom
